Man, 102, with dementia died after alleged pub push, inquest hears

Philip Ormerod, a 102-year-old man with dementia, died nearly two weeks after an alleged push at a pub in Cwmbran, an inquest has heard.

Ormerod, from Cwmbran in Torfaen, was taken to the Grange Hospital in critical condition after an incident at the Crows Nest pub on 1 August. He had reportedly gone to the stage to complain about the volume of the music while visiting the venue for a drink.

Senior coroner Caroline Saunders said Ormerod “sustained a fall at the pub” after “an allegation that he was pushed”. The inquest heard that he suffered a fractured hip, but his condition deteriorated and he died on 12 August.

A 56-year-old man from Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm. He remains on bail under investigation. Police are examining Ormerod’s death, and a forensic post-mortem examination has taken place.

The inquest was opened and then adjourned while the police investigation continues. Saunders said it would not resume if prosecutors bring a criminal case. If a conclusion is required, the hearing is scheduled for 26 May 2027. Ormerod’s son, Robert, previously described him as a “pub character” and said he wanted justice. Gwent Police urged anyone at the pub between 22:00 and 23:00 BST to come forward, while warning against inaccurate or speculative online comments.
