Man, 33, charged with murdering his mother in Galway

Dubravko Ostojic, 33, has been charged with murdering his mother at their home in Ballybrit, Galway, earlier this year.

Ostojic, of 52 Claí Mór, appeared before Galway District Court. Detective Garda Gerry Carroll gave evidence that he had been arrested, charged and cautioned. Ostojic made no reply when the charge was put to him at 10.10am.

His solicitor, John Martin, told the court that Ostojic had very good English and did not need an interpreter. Milena Ostojic, 65, died after sustaining serious injuries at the same address on 24 April.

Judge Fiona Lydon said bail was a matter for the High Court because of the seriousness of the charge. Garda Sergeant Claire Heneghan told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had instructed that an earlier charge under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act be withdrawn. Judge Lydon struck out that charge and remanded Ostojic in custody. He is due to appear by videolink at the next District Court sitting on 7 September.
