Man, 33, charged with murdering his mother in Galway

Dubravko Ostojic appeared in Galway District Court charged with murdering his 65-year-old mother, Milena Ostojic, at the home they shared in Ballybrit, Galway.

Milena Ostojic died at University Hospital Galway after sustaining injuries at the property on April 24. Ostojic had previously faced a charge of seriously assaulting her at the same address, 52 Claí Mór.

Det Garda Gerry Carroll told the court that Ostojic was arrested, charged and cautioned. He said the accused made no reply when charged with murdering his mother, contrary to common law.

Solicitor John Martin told Judge Fiona Lydon that Ostojic had good English and did not need an interpreter. An application for free legal aid was put on hold while a dispute over solicitors’ fees is resolved.

Garda Sgt Claire Heneghan said the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial by indictment in the Central Criminal Court. She also said the DPP directed the withdrawal of the Section 3 assault causing harm charge brought against Ostojic last April. The judge remanded him in custody until September 7, when he is due to appear again by video link.
