Man arrested after barricading himself in Dyrøy home for four days

A four-day armed standoff in Dyrøy, Troms, ended early Saturday when police arrested the man who had barricaded himself inside a house. No one was injured during the operation, police said.

Police moved against the house shortly after 3 a.m., when officers judged the risk to everyone involved to be lower, operations leader Robin Lindberg of the Troms police district said. The man will be taken to Tromsø, but police have not commented on his health.

The incident began with a welfare check at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers withdrew after the man threatened them with what was believed to be a firearm. At about 1 a.m. on Wednesday, he fired a shot at police from the residence.

The police operation took place at a time when the risk was assessed to be lower for everyone involved.

Neighbors were evacuated and county road 7842 was closed. Police spent several days trying to persuade the man to leave voluntarily while he remained close to firearms. Officers used drones to monitor him, and police districts from Nordland, Agder, Finnmark and Trøndelag, along with national emergency resources, assisted the Troms district.

By 5 a.m. Saturday, police had removed the barriers and said evacuees could return home. Investigators still had work to complete at the scene. Police thanked local residents and those who helped with logistics, the road closure and emergency preparedness during the prolonged operation.
