Man arrested after shooting in N.W.T. prompts shelter-in-place order

A suspect involved in a shooting in Canada's Northwest Territories has been arrested after a shelter-in-place order was in effect for several hours. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to a report of a shooting outside a local business in Fort Smith on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at approximately 2:12 a.m.

The shooting, which reportedly took place on McDougal Road, left three people injured. The male suspect fled the scene, leading authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order shortly thereafter. The order was lifted later on Saturday afternoon.

Multiple RCMP units were deployed to locate the suspect. He was arrested without incident on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at approximately 4:30 a.m. Charges are pending as an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police are asking anyone who was present during the altercation preceding the shooting to contact the Fort Smith RCMP detachment to provide a statement.
