Man arrested for allegedly setting wife ablaze in Lokoja

Authorities in Nigeria's Kogi State have arrested a man identified as Jacob Irewa for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze following a domestic disagreement. The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m. in Lokoja.

The Kogi State Police Command stated that the dispute arose after the victim allegedly burned some of the suspect's clothes without his consent. In response, the police allege the suspect threatened his wife, obtained petrol from his motorcycle, and set her on fire.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Lokoja. During a preliminary investigation, the suspect reportedly admitted to setting his wife ablaze. The police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the act and reiterated the command's zero-tolerance policy towards violence, especially domestic violence.
