Man Arrested in Gwangju for Stealing Cash from Cars with Unfolded Side Mirrors

Police in Gwangju, South Korea, have arrested a 50-year-old man suspected of a series of thefts targeting parked vehicles in the Geumho-dong neighborhood. The suspect allegedly exploited a specific vulnerability: cars with side mirrors that were not folded, which he believed indicated unlocked doors.

The man is accused of stealing approximately 400,000 South Korean won (about $300 USD) in cash from three separate vehicles between May and June. His modus operandi involved cruising through the one-room village area at night, searching for cars with unfolded side mirrors. He believed this physical characteristic was a strong indicator that the vehicle's doors might be unlocked, allowing him easy access to steal valuables.

During police questioning, the suspect reportedly stated that he committed the thefts to fund his living expenses. Authorities have indicated that he acted alone and has a history of similar offenses. His alleged pattern of behavior and the risk of flight led the police to seek an arrest warrant.

Investigators were able to track down and apprehend the suspect on June 27th at a cafe in Geumho-dong, following an analysis of nearby CCTV footage. The Gwangju Seobu Police Station has applied for an arrest warrant, citing the suspect's multiple prior convictions for similar crimes and the perceived high risk of him absconding.
