Man Arrested Near Trump's LA Golf Course With Gun Sent for Mental Health Evaluation

A California judge has halted criminal proceedings against a former US Marine arrested near President Donald Trump’s golf course in the Los Angeles area, ordering him to undergo a mental health evaluation. Jeanine John Taele, 38, was taken into custody on August 5, shortly before Trump was scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee dinner at the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Taele was found in possession of a loaded 9mm pistol, binoculars, and a badge identifying him as a "security protection agent." According to prosecutors, he had been observed at the golf course on July 31, wearing an earpiece, taking photographs, and recording videos. He returned two days later, prompting golf club staff to alert federal security personnel.

Authorities discovered firearms, body armor, high-capacity magazines, radio equipment, and notebooks containing statements described as concerning at his residence. The Guardian reported that Taele appeared in court in a suicide-prevention gown, while his attorney argued that his client was unable to comprehend or participate in the legal proceedings. Judge John Lonergan Jr. expressed concern over approximately 200 pages of writings recovered by investigators.

These documents reportedly included schedules for First Lady Melania Trump and Secret Service members, along with detailed plans for "off the grid" survival. Taele is a former US Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2008 and 2016, earning several military honors as a decorated corporal. The case follows a similar incident in September 2024, where Ryan Routh was convicted of attempting to assassinate Trump at his Florida golf club and sentenced to life in prison.
