Man arrested over GH₵1.1m fake gold scam

Police in Ghana's Bono Region have arrested a 36-year-old man, Christian Gyamfi, for his alleged involvement in a fake gold scam amounting to GH₵1.1 million. The arrest occurred at Gyamfi's hideout in Wamfie, Dormaa East District, following an intelligence-led operation.

The case was reported by Christopher Awuni, a 29-year-old gold aggregator, who stated that four men posing as gold sellers defrauded him. They sold him 110 troy ounces of what was believed to be gold for GH₵1.1 million in July. Subsequent tests, however, revealed the gold to be fake.

During interrogation, Gyamfi reportedly confessed to his role in the transaction, identifying three alleged accomplices: Abraham, also known as "French Man" and believed to be the group's leader, Isaac Antwi, and Balthazar. These three individuals are currently at large. Preliminary investigations suggest the group may have defrauded another victim of GH₵1.4 million in a separate deal in Drobo earlier this year.

Gyamfi is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation. Authorities are actively working to apprehend the remaining suspects. The police have issued a warning to the public, urging them to exercise caution and thoroughly verify all gold transactions before committing funds. They also encourage reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
