Man charged with murder of father in Co Waterford

John Cashman Jr, 45, faces a murder charge in connection with his father's death at their family farm near Dungarvan, Co Waterford. He appeared before Dungarvan District Court on Monday, where Detective Garda Martin Keohane presented the arrest, charge, and caution evidence.

Cashman Jr, who was charged with the murder of his father, John Cashman Sr, on April 13, reportedly responded "no comment" to the charge. The incident occurred at the family's approximately 150-acre farm, located about 6km northwest of Dungarvan. Emergency services attended the scene shortly after 6 p.m. on the day in question, finding the 73-year-old Mr. Cashman Sr deceased.

A previous charge of assault causing harm against the accused was struck out by Judge John O'Leary. As the district court lacks jurisdiction for bail on murder charges, Cashman Jr was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear before Clonmel District Court via video-link on Tuesday.

During the brief hearing, Cashman Jr, dressed in a grey t-shirt and black trousers, informed the court of his intention to change solicitors. He also requested to be remanded to Cork Prison. Judge O'Leary stated that the court does not determine prison assignments, a decision made by the Department of Justice.

Previously, Cashman Jr had stated he moved back to Ireland from the UK in 2021 and paid rent to his mother for living and working on the family farm. His mother, Gillian, had also testified that her son would be welcome to stay on the farm if granted bail.
