Man Convicted for Fabricating Attack Story After Gun Injury in Lithuania

A man in Lithuania has been convicted for fabricating a story about being shot by an unknown assailant, a false report that led to a criminal case. The individual, identified as M.P., initially sought medical attention for a gunshot wound and later told police he was attacked in Gargždai. He repeated this account during a police interrogation, despite being warned of the legal consequences for making false claims.

However, an investigation revealed that M.P.'s narrative did not align with the facts. He later confessed that he had accidentally injured himself with a pneumatic gun at his home while under the influence of alcohol. To cover up the true nature of his injury, he devised the elaborate story of an attack. The weapon was subsequently discarded.

During the pre-trial investigation, M.P. fully admitted his guilt and expressed sincere remorse. Evidence gathered, including witness testimonies and expert conclusions, confirmed that no crime had been committed against him. Consequently, the investigation into a potential serious health impairment was closed, and M.P. faced charges for providing a false report of a crime that did not occur.

The court considered M.P.'s confession and remorse, as well as his past conviction which has since been expunged. It also noted his current employment and the fact that he committed the offense while intoxicated. On May 20, 2026, the Klaipėda District Court sentenced M.P. to an 8-month prison sentence, suspended, and ordered him to participate in addiction prevention and rehabilitation programs for six months.
