Man Dies After Police Operation in Higüey

Roberto Then Almeida, 24, known as "Yensy" or "El Mello," died Thursday after sustaining a gunshot wound during what police described as an exchange of fire with officers in Higüey. The incident occurred during a police operation involving multiple raids aimed at apprehending Almeida, who was wanted for alleged involvement in crimes including robbery and assault.

Almeida was transferred to the Hospital de Especialidades Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention. According to the police report, Almeida was a fugitive, considered highly dangerous, and was being sought under several arrest warrants.

The police report indicated that Almeida had seven active police records, including alleged participation in a robbery where individuals were dispossessed of motorcycles and cash. Other records pertained to general robbery incidents. The National Police is currently investigating the details surrounding the alleged confrontation and Almeida's subsequent death.
