Man dies after serious assault in Dublin; murder investigation launched

A man in his 40s has died following a serious assault in Dublin earlier this week, prompting a murder investigation.

The victim had been in intensive care at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital since suffering serious injuries during an assault on North Great Charles Street on Monday. He passed away on Friday. The Coroner's office and the State Pathologist have been notified, and a postmortem examination will be conducted.

Blessed Mercy Mtwali, 27, of no fixed address, appeared before Dublin District Court on Wednesday charged under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act. The charge carries a potential life sentence upon conviction. Mtwali was remanded in custody to appear again next week. Bail was opposed by Garda Karen O’Connell due to fears of a flight risk and the gravity of the case.

Gardaí have established an incident room at Mountjoy Garda station and appointed a senior investigating officer to lead the inquiry. A family liaison officer is supporting the deceased's family. Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant camera footage, particularly delivery or taxi drivers who were in the North Great Charles Street area between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Monday, to contact Mountjoy Garda station or the Garda Confidential Line.
