Man dies from adulterated tequila in Guanajuato; sixth victim in three weeks

Authorities in Guanajuato, Mexico, are investigating the death of a 52-year-old man who succumbed to methanol poisoning after drinking adulterated tequila. This incident marks the sixth fatality in the state linked to the consumption of contaminated alcohol within the last three weeks, raising serious public health concerns.

The latest victim reportedly purchased the tainted tequila on a Wednesday and later fell ill, leading to his death at the General Hospital of Irapuato. State investigative agents seized alcoholic beverages from a business in the La Ganadera neighborhood of Irapuato on Sunday, June 28, 2026, as part of the ongoing inquiry.

This death follows a tragic event on June 6, where attendees of a quinceañera party in Salamanca were intoxicated by alcohol containing high levels of methanol. That incident resulted in five deaths and at least 28 individuals suffering health damage. Following the mass poisoning, Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo had previously warned about the dangers of adulterated beverages and their illicit sale.

Despite the escalating number of deaths, the State Ministry of Health has yet to release specific details regarding the types of alcoholic beverages involved or the exact health damages sustained by the victims. The family of the deceased, identified as José Luis, buried him on Sunday, demanding justice amidst their grief.
