Man Dies Instantly After Being Hit by Speeding Car Near Asunción Bus Station

A tragic traffic accident in Asunción claimed the life of a 43-year-old man early Tuesday morning. Luis Alberto Benítez Sosa, a recycler, was struck and killed while attempting to cross the Fernando de la Mora avenue near the city's main bus terminal.

CCTV footage captured the fatal incident around 1:42 AM. The video shows Benítez Sosa walking on the central reservation before attempting to cross. He appeared to check for oncoming traffic but misjudged the speed of a car approaching in the left lane.

The vehicle, driven by 25-year-old Richard Ariel Pereira Núñez, was traveling at high speed, according to the footage. Another car in the right lane was moving slowly to make a turn. The speeding car struck Benítez Sosa, dragging him several meters along the asphalt.

Police responded to the scene, confirming the victim's instant death due to the impact's force. The driver, Pereira Núñez, stated that the pedestrian crossed unexpectedly and that the wet road conditions due to rain prevented him from stopping in time. A breathalyzer test administered to the driver yielded a negative result for alcohol.

Based on the negative alcohol test and preliminary findings, the Public Ministry ordered the driver's release. However, the vehicle involved in the accident has been impounded for further mechanical examination.

He was eventually freed with the help of friends and transported to the health center in Zubin Potok, and then to the Kosovska Mitrovica Clinical Hospital Center (KBC), where he is currently under medical observation while the extent of his injuries is determined.
