Man Fires Shots in Air in Helsinki; Police Seize Handgun

Helsinki police apprehended a man on Saturday afternoon after he fired shots from a handgun into the air near the intersection of Koskelantie and Käpyläntie in the Käpylä district.

The incident prompted multiple calls to the emergency center from concerned citizens shortly after 1 p.m. Responding police patrols located a man fitting the suspect's description in the vicinity of the incident within approximately ten minutes. Authorities confiscated a handgun from the individual, which was confirmed to be a real firearm.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, and the man did not point the weapon at anyone or issue threats. However, police are now investigating the man on suspicion of aggravated firearms offenses, causing danger, and possession of an item suitable for inflicting serious harm. The case will proceed to a criminal investigation.
