Man gets 10 months in prison for scamming 13 people out of 1.76 million won

A 60-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for defrauding 13 individuals out of a total of 1.76 million won (approximately $1,300 USD). The man, identified as Mr. A, approached pedestrians in Seoul, claiming he had left his wallet and phone on an SRT train and needed money for transportation back to his home in Busan. He promised to repay the funds immediately upon his return.

However, investigations revealed that Mr. A was not in possession of his wallet or phone at the time of his alleged loss. The court determined that he had no intention or capacity to repay the money he solicited from his victims. This pattern of deception, repeated over several months, led to the substantial financial losses for the 13 complainants.

The Daegu District Court's criminal division handed down the sentence, finding Mr. A guilty of fraud. The court cited the repeated nature of his offenses and his prior record for similar crimes as factors influencing the sentencing. The case highlights a specific type of street scam preying on the public's willingness to help those in apparent distress.
