Man gets 2.5 years for stealing motorcycle during test ride, other thefts

A 50-year-old man, identified as A, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for a string of thefts and fraudulent activities. The Ulsan District Court announced the sentence on July 12.

A's criminal spree included breaking into a delivery company office in Yangsan in early August, where he stole gold bracelets, cash, and a Bluetooth hands-free device, totaling approximately 8.3 million won. Just a month later, he entered a motorcycle shop, claiming he wanted to test ride a motorcycle before purchasing. He then fled with a motorcycle worth 2.4 million won.

The defendant has a very extensive criminal record, including imprisonment for crimes such as theft, fraud, and property damage, and has a very high risk of recidivism as he committed further crimes during his probation period.

His offenses continued as he stole another motorcycle valued at 3 million won from in front of a restaurant. He also broke into a car trunk, taking golf clubs and a handbag worth about 1 million won. Beyond theft, A damaged a restaurant door by kicking it and drove without a license. He also consumed 450,000 won worth of food and drinks at a bar without paying.

The court highlighted A's numerous prior convictions, including imprisonment, and noted the high likelihood of him reoffending, especially since he committed these new crimes while on probation. However, the court did take into account that A had reached agreements with some of the victims.
