Man gets 3.5 years for officetel break-in, robbery, assault

A South Korean court has sentenced a man in his 40s to three and a half years in prison for robbery and assault. The man repeatedly broke into an officetel where he had previously resided, using a shared entrance code he remembered. He then tracked a female resident to her apartment, assaulted her, and stole her money and valuables.

The incident occurred between April 29 and May 5, when the defendant illegally entered the officetel in Busanjin-gu, Busan, seven times. He followed a 20-year-old female resident into her home, threatened her with a weapon if she screamed, and then physically assaulted her, including choking her for about 30 seconds. He forced her to take out a 300,000 won loan on her credit card and transfer it to a specific account. He then took her debit card and PIN, withdrawing cash from a nearby convenience store ATM. The victim sustained injuries requiring three weeks of medical treatment.
