Man gets 3.5 years for trying to throw wife out window during divorce row

A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for attempting to kill his wife by pushing her out of a window during a dispute over their impending divorce. The Daegu District Court's Criminal Division 12 handed down the sentence on March 30.

The accused, identified as A, faced charges including attempted murder. The incident took place on December 9 last year when A attempted to push his wife, identified as B, out of their apartment window. He was reportedly enraged after his wife repeatedly asked for a separation and divorce, demanded payment for living expenses and child support, and threatened to report him to the police.

The court cited that despite a previous conviction for injuring the victim while she was pregnant, the defendant assaulted the victim who was asking for a divorce and attempted to kill her by pushing her out the window.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, A was also accused of assaulting his wife and violating a restraining order. He had previously been fined 10 million won for causing injury to his wife while she was pregnant. Court documents revealed that the couple was living separately due to A's infidelity, and his wife had consistently requested a divorce.

The court cited A's past offense of injuring his pregnant wife as an aggravating factor. However, it also considered that the attack might have been impulsive after being forced to write a letter of apology and that A did pull his wife back inside the window, halting the act of murder. These factors were taken into account when determining the sentence.

Considering that the act appeared to be impulsive after being pressured to write a letter of apology upon being notified of the divorce again, and that the defendant pulled the victim, who was on the window frame, back inside, thereby stopping the act of murder, the sentencing was determined.
