Man gets jail for sexually abusing 11-year-old step-granddaughter who lived with him

A 68-year-old man in Singapore has been sentenced to 11 years and six months in jail for sexually abusing his step-granddaughter, who was 11 to 12 years old at the time of the offenses. The abuse began when a temporary sleeping arrangement during the COVID-19 pandemic led them to share a bedroom for approximately one week in 2021.

The victim initially kept the abuse a secret due to shame. She confided in friends in 2022, who advised her to report it, but she declined to avoid worrying her parents. The situation came to light when a classmate of the victim's brother discovered messages on her phone and informed her boyfriend, who then alerted their parents.

After the victim disclosed the incidents to her parents, her stepfather confronted his father. The accused initially denied any sexual misconduct, claiming he had only hugged her. However, after his son threatened to involve the police, the man confessed to having "done wrong" and moved out of the flat two days later.

Despite her stepfather's confrontation, the victim again chose not to file a police report to spare her stepfather distress. It was not until 2024 that a Child Protection Services officer convinced her to report the abuse. Prosecutors highlighted the victim's young age, the close relationship, and the significant abuse of trust as aggravating factors, noting the trauma she experienced, including self-harm and fear of men.
