Man indicted for posing as durian owner, defrauding over $240,000 for gambling

Nguyen Duy Anh Vu, 34, faces charges of fraud and asset appropriation in Dak Lak province, Vietnam, after allegedly posing as a durian orchard owner. The indictment was announced by the provincial People's Procuracy on August 19. The case has been transferred to the Dak Lak Provincial People's Court for trial.

According to the indictment, during the 2023 durian season, Vu's father owned two durian orchards in Dliê Ya commune, with estimated yields of 3 and 5 tons respectively. A neighboring orchard belonging to Vu's cousin, H.V.H., had an estimated 25 tons. Exploiting his father's absence in Hanoi, Vu claimed to be the owner of these orchards. He allegedly used the proximity of the orchards to build trust with potential buyers.

Vu then accepted advance payments from multiple individuals for durian purchases. He reportedly used these funds for online gambling and personal expenses, amassing over 6 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately $240,000 USD) from his victims. The Dak Lak Provincial People's Procuracy has recommended that residents increase their vigilance, especially during the durian harvest seasons of 2026 and beyond. They advise thorough vetting of orchard owners before signing any purchase contracts to prevent avoidable losses.
