Man jailed 10 years for cleaver attack on executive after road rage incident

A man has been sentenced to a decade in prison for a vicious assault that left a government-linked executive with severe injuries. The attack, which occurred on a motorcycle lane of the Federal Highway near Shah Alam, stemmed from a road rage incident. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Mohd. Fairuz Jaafar, was on his way to work when the accused, 43-year-old Azmi Jantan, blocked his path.

The victim suffered critical injuries to vital organs such as the head and arm, as can be seen from the pictures of the injuries submitted.

Enraged, the accused allegedly used a meat cleaver to attack Jaafar, causing fractures to his shoulder, left arm, and hand, as well as wounds to his head and face. Medical reports presented in court detailed the critical nature of the injuries sustained by the executive. The court heard that the assault happened after Jaafar honked at Jantan for obstructing his lane.

The weapon used by the accused was a meat cleaver, a sharp weapon that can be fatal.

Sessions Court Judge ‘Ainul Bashiirah Dona Don Biyajid handed down the 10-year sentence and two lashes after upholding Jantan's guilty plea. The prosecution had argued for a severe penalty, citing public interest and the critical injuries inflicted with a potentially lethal weapon. Jantan, a salesman for a well-known water and air purifier brand, had claimed he brought the cleaver from home intending to discard it. He pleaded for a lighter sentence but his appeal was dismissed by the judge.

The victim said he was attacked while he stopped his motorcycle on the side of the road when heading towards you (the accused) and was immediately attacked by you using a meat cleaver.
