Man jailed 9 months for pushing elderly attacker, causing fatal head injury

A man who intervened when his father was attacked has been sentenced to nine months in jail after the attacker died from a head injury sustained during the altercation.

Jimmy Yar Hock Long, 37, pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt that turned out to be grievous. The court heard that Yar's father and the deceased, Goh Kim Ann, had a history of disputes, with both individuals having received warnings from the police for their behavior towards each other.

The incident unfolded on May 25 last year when Mr. Goh approached Yar's father from behind and began hitting him with an umbrella. Witnessing this, Yar rushed to his father's aid, grabbed Mr. Goh, and pushed him to the ground. The 78-year-old attacker hit his head on the pavement and was taken to the hospital. He remained in a coma and was declared dead on May 27, 2025, with an autopsy confirming the cause of death was a head injury.

The prosecution sought a jail term of 10 to 12 months, emphasizing that death resulted from Yar's actions, despite the victim's initial assault. The defense argued for a sentence of no more than eight months, highlighting that Mr. Goh initiated the unprovoked attack on Yar's elderly father and that the fatal injuries occurred when the deceased fell.

Defense lawyers stated that Yar's intervention was spontaneous, driven by concern for his father's safety. The maximum penalty for voluntarily causing hurt that results in grievous bodily harm includes up to five years in jail, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.
