Man Killed, Woman Arrested in Guayaquil Armed Clash with Police

Guayaquil, Ecuador – An armed confrontation between police and two individuals on a motorcycle resulted in the death of one man and the arrest of a woman in Guayaquil's Cristo del Consuelo sector. The incident unfolded early on August 22, 2026, during a routine police patrol.

According to a police report, officers on patrol noticed a black Shineray motorcycle carrying a man and a woman. When the pair attempted to flee upon seeing the police, officers initiated a pursuit. The report states that the motorcycle's occupants fired at the officers, triggering an armed exchange.

Police claim they acted within legal, necessary, and proportional guidelines, perceiving a direct threat to their lives. During the shootout, the motorcycle's driver sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the lung. The woman accompanying him was taken into custody. Authorities recovered a revolver and the motorcycle, which are now evidence in the ongoing investigation.

The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Ecuadorian Erwin Antonio Peñafiel Rodríguez, who had previous arrests for robbery in 2019 and weapons possession in 2023. The arrested woman, 23-year-old Isabel G., also Ecuadorian, has no prior criminal record.
