Man shot by police in Copenhagen detained for 18 days

A 22-year-old man faces 18 days of pre-trial detention after being shot by police in Copenhagen's Tingbjerg district. The court ordered his detention without his presence due to injuries sustained. Prosecutors charged him with attempted aggravated assault against a police officer early Sunday. The incident occurred after a civilian police car attempted to stop a ride-sharing vehicle. The car failed to stop, prompting police to use sirens and lights. The driver then accelerated and fled, driving the wrong way around a traffic island. Police identified the driver as a known individual, but he was not the one shot.

When the car reached Tingbjerg, the driver fled on foot. He had made phone calls, and as police pursued, garbage containers were pushed into the road, and stones were thrown at officers. Two men were found in a basement where police later discovered 30 grams of hashish. A video showed them receiving a phone call during the car chase.

The judge focused solely on whether there was a justified suspicion of guilt, not on the merits of the case. The prosecution argued for detention, citing the man's March conviction for robbery and the risk of reoffending. The judge did not address this specific point in his remarks. The 22-year-old, from his hospital bed, requested his usual lawyer.
