Manchester United nears Baleba deal as midfield rebuild continues

Manchester United's midfield overhaul appears to be nearing its conclusion with the potential acquisition of Carlos Baleba from Brighton. The club has already secured the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa within a short period.

While names like Aurelien Tchouameni, Alex Scott, and Manu Kone were previously linked, and Sander Berge and Tyler Adams have more recently emerged as possibilities, Manchester United has reportedly made a significant move for Brighton's Carlos Baleba. An initial offer of £60 million, with an additional £5 million in add-ons, has been lodged, though it is expected to be insufficient. Nevertheless, negotiations are continuing, and the transfer is anticipated to be completed.

The club's data and recruitment department are credited with successfully reshaping Michael Carrick's midfield. With the departure of Casemiro imminent and Bruno Fernandes having moved to a more advanced role, and Manuel Ugarte not highly rated, Manchester United faced a summer needing to bolster its midfield. Kobbie Mainoo is the only experienced midfielder expected to play a significant role in the upcoming season.

Mainoo excels at receiving the ball in tight spaces and advancing play. Santos has demonstrated strong defensive screening in pre-season, while Tielemans offers composure and an excellent passing range, aiming to improve his goal output. The recent defeat against AC Milan highlighted a need for energy and a box-to-box presence, an area where Baleba's quick ground coverage is seen as a key strength. Should the transfer materialize, and once Baleba recovers from an ankle injury, Carrick will have a variety of midfield options.
