Mangbetu and Kuba Cultural Heritages to be Celebrated in Kinshasa Exhibition

Kinshasa will host an exhibition dedicated to the creative genius of the Mangbetu and Kuba peoples from August 24 to 26, 2026, at the National Museum. Titled "Architecture of the Body: Mangbetu and Kuba Heritages Reinterpreted," the event aims to highlight the rich cultural legacies of these Congolese communities.

The exhibition will feature thirteen distinct pieces presented through six silhouettes, a handbag, and accompanying photographs. Each display will include explanatory texts detailing cultural references and archival visuals that inspired the creations. Additionally, visitors can expect to see three books used in the research process, three art objects connected to the sources of inspiration, and six traditional tapestry works created in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This initiative is spearheaded by Lydie Okosa Bobunda, an internationally renowned Congolese stylist and fashion designer and founder of the Lok Style label. Currently studying in France, Bobunda views the exhibition as both a duty to remember and a cultural and historical exploration. She shared her vision in an interview with Jean Marc Matwaki, emphasizing the importance of preserving and celebrating these unique heritages.
