Manipur’s final electoral roll records 1.96 million voters after revision

Manipur’s final photo electoral roll for 2026 records 1,960,620 voters across the state’s 60 assembly constituencies. The roll lists 953,350 male electors, 1,006,962 female electors and 308 third-gender electors.

The total represents a net increase of 26,221 from the draft roll published on July 5, which listed 1,934,399 electors. During the revision, officials added 56,871 names and deleted 30,650. The roll was published in line with instructions from the Election Commission of India.

The revision comes amid demands from civil bodies representing different communities for an updated National Register of Citizens before the Census exercise. The central government deferred the Census exercise in Manipur after a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a gazette notification on September 5 deferring house-listing operations for Census 2027 in Manipur. The notification amended the earlier nationwide provision to exclude Manipur “till further declaration.”

The Manipur Legislative Assembly unanimously reaffirmed its earlier resolutions on August 5, 2022, and March 1, 2024, calling for the NRC to be updated before the Census. The demand has brought together political parties from both the ruling and opposition sides, along with civil bodies from several communities. Kuki-Zo civil bodies, however, have opposed an NRC update using 1951 as the base year, while supporting the periodic conduct of the Census.
