Manitoba MLA among victims of multiple home break-ins; man arrested

Independent Manitoba MLA Mark Wasyliw was asleep in his Winnipeg home when a man smashed through his living room window with a flower pot on the morning of July 25, 2026. Wasyliw, the MLA for Fort Garry, described hearing a loud bang and shattering glass before confronting a man demanding alcohol and specific items from his dining room.

Wasyliw was one of several residents who called 911 to report break-ins along Kingsway Avenue. Police responded and determined that six homes and a high school had been targeted. The suspect reportedly threw rocks and bricks through windows and glass doors, confronting and threatening some residents while stealing items. The suspect did not know any of the victims.

There was a man with his head sticking through the hole and he was talking gibberish – not making a lot of sense – but started asking, demanding, for alcohol.

As Wasyliw went to retrieve his phone to call the police, the suspect allegedly threw concrete through another window before fleeing. Hearing further crashes outside, Wasyliw continued to contact authorities. Upon the police's arrival, another victim pointed out the suspect, who was walking down the street and allegedly armed with a broken liquor bottle.

The 35-year-old suspect was arrested without incident. He faces seven counts of breaking and entering, one count of assault with a weapon, one count of uttering threats, and one count of failure to comply with a release order. The spree of break-ins caused an estimated $25,000 in damages, but fortunately, no injuries were reported among the victims.
