Chirag Paswan has distanced himself from Swatantra Bhardwaj and filed a formal complaint after the Hindutva influencer appeared in a viral clip claiming the minister was his “elder brother.”

Paswan’s party, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), sought action against Bhardwaj on Friday. The move followed a video in which Bhardwaj allegedly claimed he had political backing and suggested that his connections explained why police had not acted against him.

The attacker has sought to give the impression that action has not been taken against him because of me and my party. I have lodged a formal complaint against this misuse of my name.

The controversy grew after the purported video showed Bhardwaj claiming to have attacked the father of a protester during demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in June. He allegedly said he could “crack” a person’s skull and invoked the names of several political figures, including Paswan, Delhi minister Kapil Mishra and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bhardwaj was detained after the Cockroach Janta Party staged a major protest outside the Parliament Street police station over the alleged attack. Paswan also expressed support for Sanjay Azad, who was allegedly attacked by Bhardwaj. Mishra had not responded to Bhardwaj’s claims in the material provided.
