Unnao man arrested for allegedly pushing wife into the Ganges over affair suspicion

A 20-year-old woman remained missing after her husband allegedly pushed her into the Ganges from a bridge in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district during an argument over suspected infidelity.

Police arrested the woman’s 22-year-old husband, Sujeet Rajput, after eyewitness accounts and his explanation of what happened raised suspicion. Witnesses said the couple began arguing on the Pariyar-Bithoor bridge in Safipur as they returned from her parental home.

Rajput allegedly accused his wife, Usha, of having an affair. When she protested, he allegedly pushed her over the bridge. The strong river current swept her away.

Police said Rajput called them immediately after the incident and claimed Usha had jumped into the river after complaining of stomach pain. Officers questioned him at the scene and later arrested him.

Divers began searching on Friday night, but darkness and the strong current prevented an extensive operation. The search resumed after daylight on Saturday, though Usha had still not been located. Police said the circumstances would become clearer if she was found and recovered, while further legal action continued.
