Maradona's therapeutic companions to testify in death trial

Therapeutic companions Carlos Bacchini, Carlos Cottaro, and Alejandro Cottaro, who worked with Diego Maradona shortly before his death, are scheduled to testify in the ongoing trial concerning the football icon's passing. Seven health professionals face charges related to Maradona's death on November 25, 2020.

During a previous hearing in a trial that was annulled in May 2025, Bacchini testified that his services were terminated just two days after Maradona moved into the house where he received home care and ultimately died. Bacchini also claimed that Maradona's personal assistants restricted his contact with the outside world, often stating the former footballer was "resting" even when he was awake.

Last Thursday, head nurse Mariano Perroni, the first defendant to answer questions from the prosecution, denied participating in a "criminal plan to kill" Maradona. He asserted that he repeatedly suggested improvements to the patient's care, which were ignored by doctors Nancy Forlini and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, both of whom are defendants.

Perroni also denied altering nursing records from the day of Maradona's death, stating he did not receive or give instructions to modify them. He reportedly wishes to answer questions from other parties in the trial, although this has not been confirmed. Also on trial are Maradona's personal doctor Leopoldo Luque and psychologist Carlos Díaz, accused of simple homicide with eventual intent, a charge carrying a maximum sentence of 25 years.
