Marcelo Gallardo emerges as top candidate for Ecuador coaching job

Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo has emerged as a strong contender to take the helm of the Ecuador national football team. Sources close to the coach and the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF), led by Francisco Egas, have confirmed that initial discussions have taken place.

While the scenario is far from a done deal, Gallardo is reportedly analyzing his career options. The FEF has not yet entered negotiations regarding salary or contract terms. The search for a new coach began after Sebastián Beccacece's tenure concluded following the World Cup, where Ecuador reached the knockout stage before being eliminated by Mexico.

Gallardo's availability as a free agent significantly simplifies the process for the FEF, as there is no club to negotiate with or a release clause to pay. The 50-year-old coach has been without a team since leaving River Plate in February, having participated in the World Cup as an ESPN analyst. His second stint at River was less successful than his highly decorated first period, during which he won 14 titles, including two Copa Libertadores.

Ecuador is also considering other candidates, including Luis Zubeldía, who recently departed from Fluminense. Gallardo's name has gained considerable traction in Ecuadorian media, with reports suggesting meetings with Egas. The FEF aims to appoint a new coach by the end of August.
