Marches and protests expected in Mexico City on Sunday, with possible traffic disruptions

A series of marches, protests and public gatherings is expected across Mexico City on Sunday, with authorities warning of possible traffic disruptions. The events are scheduled at locations ranging from the Monument to the Revolution and the Zócalo to Ciudad Universitaria and major Metro stations.

The Alianza Nacional un Millón de Esperanzas plans to march at 11 a.m. from the Monument to the Revolution to the National Palace to oppose the General Animal Welfare Law. At the same time, Refugio Franciscano A.C. will lead a walk from Misterios Metro station toward the Basilica of Guadalupe, demanding action over an animal shelter and the return of animals seized by authorities.

Other events include a 9 a.m. gathering by Mercaditas Autónomas Momoxcas in San Antonio Tecómitl and a protest by Movimiento Resistencia Social Coahuila in the Zócalo calling for an end to violence. Family and friends of a missing student will meet at the La Universidad del Siglo XXI mural in Ciudad Universitaria at 10 a.m. Mexico Previene A.C. will hold an “Air Clean Now!” event at Mercado El 100 at 10:30 a.m.

Fans of the band Camilo Séptimo will gather at the Angel of Independence at 11 a.m. for a tribute to the keyboardist who was killed on Sept. 1. Direct Action Everywhere Mexico City will also meet at the Monument to the Revolution to promote animal rights. Later events include a pro-Palestinian “Kites for Gaza” gathering at Ciudad Universitaria, an animal-exploitation abolition protest near the Palace of Fine Arts, an anti-economic-violence exchange at the Juárez Hemicycle, and a housing justice event by evicted residents in Merced Balbuena. Autogestión Feminista will collect signatures at Bellas Artes Metro station for a proposal on medical assistance to die in Mexico City.
