Marginalized in History, Lujo Matutinović Left Vast Knowledge in Vienna and Paris Archives

Lujo Matutinović, a figure often relegated to the margins of history, left behind a vast body of knowledge preserved in the archives of Vienna and Paris. His life offers a unique perspective on how Dalmatian and Bokelji soldiers, trained within the Venetian system, adapted to the turbulent political realignments between 1797 and 1815. Matutinović's experiences spanned multiple lifetimes: as a boy, he sailed the Atlantic; as a young man, he fought Tunisian pirates off the African coast; he was imprisoned in Venice as an Austrian officer; and he served as a French lieutenant in Prussia. He eventually died quietly in Split in 1844 as a retired Austrian major general at the age of 78.

Historian Drago Roksandić, who began researching Matutinović in the 1990s, aptly labeled him a "uomo limite" – a borderline man, living at the crossroads of empires, epochs, and identities. Matutinović's biography, that of a professional soldier and writer, provides a template for examining the history of "marginalized" individuals within the middle strata of society during transitional periods. However, his marginalization is not one of insignificance; rather, it stems from his position on the periphery of great powers, always in between, never fully integrated.

Matutinović's life story illuminates the complex experiences of individuals caught between shifting political landscapes. His military career, which saw him serve under Venetian, Austrian, and French flags, reflects the broader geopolitical struggles of the era.
