Marine Life Fossils Discovered in Yozgat, Scientists Called to Investigate

Lokman Atıl, a livestock farmer in the Araplı neighborhood of Sorgun, Yozgat, stumbled upon a significant discovery while grazing his animals: numerous fossilized remnants believed to belong to marine creatures. Atıl noted that while he had previously found smaller fragments in the area, his recent observations revealed a much richer diversity of fossils.

Describing the findings, Atıl stated that the fossilized remains varied in size, from as small as lentils and chickpeas to larger forms. Among the discoveries were fossils identified as sea snails, alongside other species yet to be identified. "When we examined the stones we saw, we saw and observed that they were fossils," Atıl said. "We found small ones before, and when we found bigger ones, our enthusiasm for this work increased even more."

Atıl believes this discovery indicates that Yozgat, in addition to hosting human history, also hosted a rich biological diversity in the distant past, potentially millions of years ago. He has appealed to relevant institutions and academics to conduct a comprehensive paleontological study of the area, expressing his conviction that the site is a hidden fossil paradise that will illuminate his province.
