Maritime Area Rehabilitation Project Completed in Oman's Musandam Governorate

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has finalized a maritime area rehabilitation project in Oman's Musandam Governorate, enhancing vital infrastructure for the fisheries sector. The initiative spans coastal sites in the wilayats of Diba and Khasab, along with the Lima area, aiming to bolster the sustainability of marine resources and improve working conditions for the region's fishers.

the governorate is distinguished by a rich marine environment abundant with diverse fishery resources. He noted that commercial fishing stands as one of the foremost economic activities upon which the local population relies, serving as a primary source of livelihood.

Dr. Ali Abdullah Al Alawi, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Musandam, highlighted the governorate's rich marine environment and the significance of commercial fishing as a primary livelihood for the local population. He explained that the project addresses the challenges faced by fishers operating in scattered marine areas, often far from administrative centers. The rehabilitation aims to equip these sites with essential services, thereby supporting the fishing community.

the project includes the provision of fixed quays and canopies, which will contribute to mitigating the challenges faced by fishers and their families, enhance the quality of services extended to them, improve operational conditions at landing sites, and support the maintenance of quality control standards for landed fish.

The project's key components include the construction of 12 fixed quays and the installation of 11 canopies. Seven quays were built in Diba and five in Khasab, while the canopies were installed in Khasab's marine zones. These facilities are designed to mitigate difficulties for fishers and their families, improve the quality of services at landing sites, maintain fish quality standards, protect fishing gear, and facilitate easier boat embarkation and disembarkation, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly and women. The initiative is expected to encourage continued fishing practices, boost production, and support the local economy.
