Marvel announces ‘Black Panther III’ at Comic-Con, David Jonsson to star

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will return to Wakanda with the announcement of "Black Panther III" at Comic-Con. British actor David Jonsson will star as the lead in the film, scheduled for release on December 15, 2028.

Jonsson, known for his roles in HBO's "Industry" and the upcoming film "The Long Walk," will step into the MCU as the son of T’Challa, the original Black Panther. The character was famously portrayed by Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 at age 43 after a battle with colon cancer.

Marvel revealed the sequel with Jonsson appearing before thousands of fans in Hall H at Comic-Con. "Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join," Jonsson told the crowd. He added, "I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let this screen do the talk."

Oscar-winning director Ryan Coogler, who helmed the first two "Black Panther" films, will return to direct the third installment. "Today is extra special," Coogler said, joining Jonsson and Marvel executive producer Kevin Feige on stage. Coogler explained that "Black Panther III" will focus on T’Challa's son as he matures and follows in his father's heroic footsteps. The first "Black Panther" film was a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion in 2018.
