Mass Shooting in Arizona Injures Nine; Suspect Shot by Police

A mass shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona, left nine people injured in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police engaged the suspected gunman, critically wounding him and taking him to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on East Congress Street, an area popular for its bars, restaurants, and nightlife. Responding officers heard the gunshots and immediately moved toward the source. "Officers immediately ran towards the place where the shots were coming from and encountered the suspect," stated Frank Magos of the Tucson Police Department at a press conference, as reported by Newsweek. Magos added that officers issued multiple commands to the suspect before one officer discharged their weapon. No officers were injured during the intervention.

All nine victims sustained injuries and received on-site medical attention before being transported to the hospital. Magos noted that most suffered gunshot wounds to their extremities, and all were adults. The Pima County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the shooting. Separately, the Tucson Police Department will examine the officers' actions during the intervention to determine if any irregularities occurred. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero described the city as once again being hit by a "serious and senseless act of gun violence" and called for stricter gun control measures.
