Mass tourism: Another demonstration against mass tourism on Mallorca

Mallorca residents took to the streets once more to protest against mass tourism, with the latest demonstration held in the western town of Sóller. This follows a major rally in Palma just two weeks prior, highlighting growing local discontent with the island's tourism levels.

The organization "Menys Turisme Més Vida" (Less Tourism, More Life) called for the Sóller protest. Authorities reported around 1,000 participants, while local publications like "Mallorca Zeitung" and "Mallorca Magazin" estimated the crowd at 2,000 and 2,500 respectively.

During the demonstration, some protesters directed chants against tourists, often referred to locally as "guiris." Unlike the previous protest in Palma, there were no confrontations with police this time. The "Menys Turisme Més Vida" platform first organized protests in 2024, with a central focus on the severe housing crisis exacerbated by the influx of tourists.

The demonstrators voiced concerns about the escalating housing shortage, a direct consequence of the island's booming tourism industry. The protest underscores the tension between the economic benefits of tourism and the strain it places on local resources and residents' quality of life.
