Massive landslide in Hualien's Zhuoxi upstream: Forestry Bureau says no landslide lake risk

A massive landslide has occurred in the mountainous region of Hualien's Zhuoxi Township, specifically in the upstream area of the Fengping River. The collapse has generated substantial dust clouds, creating a visible white haze that has alarmed local residents who feared the formation of a new landslide lake.

The Forestry Bureau's Hualien branch confirmed the incident, stating the landslide is located in Forest Management Area 41. The affected area covers approximately 60 hectares. Crucially, officials have determined that the debris has not blocked the main river channel, thus alleviating immediate concerns about the formation of a landslide lake.

Residents in the area, particularly in the Shanli Village of Zhuoxi Township, have been observing the dust plumes for at least a full day. Online discussions and shared photos reflected anxieties about potential geological instability. Some reports also noted seismic waves detected around the time of the landslide, though further confirmation is pending.

To gain a clearer understanding of the situation, the Forestry Bureau is utilizing satellite imagery and plans further aerial surveys. A team from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University will conduct on-site inspections to evaluate the landslide's extent and assess any potential risks to downstream areas. The focus remains on monitoring the stability of the affected slope and ensuring the safety of nearby communities.
