Massive Smoke Development: Evacuation in Rhineland-Palatinate Possible Due to Forest Fire

Residents in two villages in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany are being warned to prepare for potential evacuation due to a large forest and meadow fire. The district issued an alert advising inhabitants of Langenfeld and Arft to ready themselves to leave their homes. This measure is currently precautionary, according to the local authorities.

The affected villages collectively house around 900 residents. The warning comes after a separate forest fire in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday morning led to the evacuation of the village of Gey, home to approximately 1,800 people. In that instance, the fire had reportedly reached within 250 meters of Gey by Friday morning.

Those in the Rhineland-Palatinate villages are instructed to pack only essential items for a two-to-three-day period and to follow the guidance of emergency personnel and public order officials. They are also urged to assist elderly and vulnerable neighbors and to pay attention to loudspeaker announcements.

The fire is accompanied by massive smoke development, impacting areas including Langenfeld, Hohenleimbach, Arft, Netterhöfe, Hausten, and Morswiesen. The public is advised to avoid the affected region, keep windows and doors closed, and shut off ventilation and air conditioning systems. The exact size of the burned area is currently unknown, but a helicopter is assisting firefighting efforts. Authorities are working urgently to gain control of the fire and prevent its further spread.
