Massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow injures people, ignites industrial fires

Moscow experienced a massive Ukrainian drone assault overnight, with Russian authorities claiming to have neutralized over 400 drones. The attack, which occurred between 8:30 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Moscow time, reportedly caused injuries and fires at industrial facilities located south of the capital.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that most of the drones were intercepted by air defense forces in the outer regions, with 85 drones reportedly destroyed as they approached the city. However, some wreckage fell on industrial facilities and residential areas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attack, stating that several "logistical facilities and an oil depot" were hit. He also claimed that his forces struck two other oil tankers and four cargo ships in the Black Sea.

Telegram channels reported a fire at an oil depot in Podolsk, a city about 30 kilometers south of Moscow. While the local head of the district initially claimed the attack was repelled, authorities later confirmed drone debris fell on industrial sites. A warehouse belonging to the e-commerce company Wildberries also caught fire in Podolsk, an entity that had previously been targeted in attacks north of Moscow and in the Tambov region. Damage to infrastructure was also reported in the nearby city of Domodedovo.

Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that six people sustained injuries of varying severity, with one man in critical condition. Russian authorities described the event as one of the largest attacks on the Moscow region, comparable to an earlier incident on July 7 involving 430 drones. The Ministry of Defense also reported destroying a total of 381 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Rostov, Tambov, Ryazan, Smolensk, Tula, Moscow region, Krasnodar, and Crimea.
