Massive Wildfires Force 220,000 Evacuations in France, Approaching Bordeaux

Southwestern France is battling a ferocious wildfire that has compelled the evacuation of 220,000 people, as flames edge closer to the renowned wine city of Bordeaux. The inferno, which has been raging out of control since midweek in the Gironde region, forced an additional 55,000 people to flee their homes overnight Sunday. Authorities issued urgent evacuation orders for five more localities southwest of the historic city.

The fire has become "extremely virulent again and unpredictable, generating its own winds and advancing erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area," Nunez stated on X, though he noted a calmer period by the end of the night.

Spain is concurrently dealing with its own fire-related evacuations along its eastern coast. Pope Leo XIV has called for prayers for those affected by the "devastating wildfires" in both countries, expressing solidarity with victims and commending the work of rescue personnel.

In the Gironde region alone, an estimated 42,000 hectares (162 square miles) have been consumed by the fire, primarily affecting forests and scrubland rendered tinder-dry by successive heatwaves. This area is four times the size of Paris. The firefighting operation involves 2,500 personnel, supported by 18 planes and helicopters, including contributions from other European nations and military support. Soldiers have also been mobilized. The blaze has alarmingly developed into self-feeding firestorms on several occasions, a concerning development for French fire services. Seventy-five firefighters have been treated for injuries, and hundreds of homes have been destroyed.
