Matthew McConaughey reveals which film earns him the most in royalties

Matthew McConaughey says the romantic comedy "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" remains his most lucrative film, generating the highest royalty income more than 20 years after its premiere. The actor, who starred alongside Kate Hudson in the 2003 film, called it a genre classic that continues to pay off financially.

Speaking on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, McConaughey expressed his fondness for the movie, stating it's likely his favorite romantic comedy. He recalled a time when he could anticipate royalty checks, particularly around Valentine's Day, due to DVD sales and cable television.

McConaughey believes the film has earned a permanent place in romantic comedy history. "Look, for me, that movie, within that genre... let me say that's my genre. 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' is a true classic and one of the key romantic comedies," he stated. He has starred in other popular romantic comedies, including "The Wedding Planner" (2001), "Failure to Launch" (2006), "Fool's Gold" (2008), and "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" (2009).

The film, directed by Donald Petrie, is based on a book by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long. It follows Benjamin Barry, played by McConaughey, a marketing executive who bets he can make any woman fall in love with him. Simultaneously, journalist Andie Anderson, portrayed by Hudson, is writing an article on how to drive a man away in 10 days. Hudson has previously expressed openness to a sequel, stating in 2024 that it depends on the script and mutual interest from both herself and McConaughey.
