Mavunde: Local Content Drive Transforms Tanzania’s Mining Sector

Tanzania's mining sector is undergoing a significant transformation, with local content driving increased participation by Tanzanians in key roles and supply chains, according to Minerals Minister Anthony Mavunde. He stated that Tanzanians are now occupying leading positions within mining companies and benefiting from employment opportunities.

Mavunde, speaking at the Fifth Local Content Compliance Forum in the Mining Sector, contrasted the current situation with previous years. He recalled widespread public outcry over the exclusion of Tanzanians from the sector, noting that even basic necessities like chickens and eggs were imported despite local availability.

"There was an outcry from Tanzanians that we were missing opportunities to supply goods and services to many mines," Mavunde said. "At times, even chickens and eggs were imported from abroad. That was the situation Tanzanians experienced regarding local content, and it caused major con."

This shift signifies the success of the government's local content policy, which aims to ensure that Tanzanians benefit more directly from the country's natural resources. The policy has addressed past grievances and opened doors for local businesses and individuals to contribute to and profit from the mining industry.
