Mayo wins All-Ireland title, ending 75-year 'curse'

In a stunning upset that has etched itself into Gaelic football history, Mayo has triumphed over Kerry in the All-Ireland football final. The victory, secured with a score of 1-20 to 1-17 at Croke Park, not only ends a grueling 75-year wait for the coveted title but also shatters the infamous "Mayo curse."

The "curse," a legend rooted in a supposed incident involving a funeral procession in 1951, had cast a long shadow over generations of Mayo footballers. It was said that Mayo would not win again until all the players from that victorious 1951 team had passed away. Since then, Mayo had reached 11 All-Ireland finals, losing each one, including a heartbreaking replay loss in 2016 and a final in 2021, which occurred shortly before the last surviving player from the 1951 team died.

This year's final saw Mayo face defending champions Kerry, who were aiming for a record 40th title. Despite an early setback when Kerry's David Clifford scored a goal in the 15th minute, Mayo fought back, trailing by only one point at halftime. The team's resurgence was fueled by the exceptional talent of its younger players, including 18-year-old Kobe McDonald and 19-year-old Darragh Beirne. McDonald contributed three points, while Beirne scored Mayo's crucial goal, igniting their path to victory.
