Mayor Mamdani backs Democratic candidates in New York congressional primaries

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is actively engaging in the upcoming New York primaries on June 23, lending his support to several Democratic candidates vying for congressional seats. His endorsements signal a strategic alignment with figures he believes will champion key issues for the city's residents.

Among those receiving Mamdani's backing is Darializa Avila Chevalier, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for New York's 13th Congressional District. Mamdani highlighted Chevalier's work on immigration and affordability during an appearance on "The Briefing with Jen Psaki." He specifically noted her involvement in initiatives assisting individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and her broader community engagement in New York.

Chevalier, who previously worked on Mamdani's mayoral campaign, faces incumbent federal representative Adriano Espaillat in the primary. She expressed gratitude for Mamdani's support, stating, "Zohran Mamdani showed the entire country last year that the power of the people can defeat a machine."

Mamdani is also supporting Claire Valdez in her bid for the 7th Congressional District. Valdez, currently a member of the New York State Assembly, aims to succeed Representative Nydia Velázquez, who is retiring. Valdez's platform focuses on housing, public health, labor rights, education, and immigration, aligning with a democratic socialist ideology. She will compete against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in a closely watched primary.

Additionally, Mamdani has endorsed Brad Lander, who is running for the 10th Congressional District. Lander's primary opponent is current federal representative Dan Goldman. Mamdani's endorsements reflect his commitment to supporting candidates who he believes will advance progressive policies and represent the interests of New York's diverse communities.
