Mayor's Holiday Cut Short After Town Hall Car Found Uninsured

A holiday trip for the mayor and vice-mayor of Sirețel commune in Romania's Iași county ended abruptly when police stopped their vehicle for a routine check. Mayor Gelu Spaiuc and his wife, Vice-Mayor Doina Spaiuc, were en route to Vatra Dornei when authorities discovered the town hall car they were using had no valid mandatory third-party liability insurance (RCA).

The incident occurred in Vatra Dornei, where the Sirețel town hall vehicle was pulled over. Police found the car was being driven without the required insurance. As a result, the vehicle's registration certificate and license plates were confiscated according to legal procedures.

Local media reported that the mayor and vice-mayor were forced to arrange alternative transport, such as taxis or trains, to return home. The town hall vehicle remained impounded in Vatra Dornei until the officials settled the fine and obtained a new insurance policy.

Gelu Spaiuc has served as mayor of Sirețel since 2020, with his wife holding the position of vice-mayor. Their combined annual income, based on recent declarations, is approximately 9,600 lei per month for the mayor and 4,800 lei for the vice-mayor. The commune has a population of about 3,500 residents.
